Fellowship on #Harvestrally Sunday!
Second Sunday Sex Sundays continued today with "Sexual Abuse: A Collector of Me" after this morning’s service, a member came up to me and commented that they thought i was also going to address the higher rates of sexual abuse and much lower life expectancy that black transgender folks face. i replied that some of these matters would be addressed in the months to come, but that some relevant statistics could be added to the facebook post. please consider the following statistics: “More Black transgender people live in poverty (38%) than in the Black community (24%). The survey also found that Black trans people have been sexually assaulted (57%) at a greater rate than other people in the Black community (53%). A cisgendered Black woman’s life expectancy is 78 years of age, 45% longer than a Black transwoman. People in this population are at risk by simply existing with dark skin and as transwomen. Their lives are devalued perhaps more than any other group in the country.” (https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/black-transgender-community-carries-an-extra-heavy-burden/). if my math is correct, this means that black transgender women’s life expectancies are about 43 years old – in comparison with cisgendered black women’s life expectancies (i.e., 78 years of age).
